Seven Tips to Help You Survive Your Bathroom Renovation

Seven Tips to Help You Survive Your Bathroom Renovation

Your bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. It’s where you unwind in the tub with a glass of wine after a long day at work, and where you get splashed by the kids at bath time. Practicality, style and comfort are just a few of the factors to consider when you’re thinking about a bathroom renovation. Here are some tips to help you survive the process.

1. Decide on Required Changes:

Take a good look at the bathroom you already have and consider what you need to change. Maybe your outdated separate hot and cold taps don’t work properly, or you need to replace some cracked tiles. Maybe you’d like a decent-sized bathtub to bathe your large, energetic dog in (good luck with that one!).

2. Consider Intended Use:

Once you’ve decided on the specific changes, think about how you intend your bathroom to be used. A guest bathroom is different from the kids’ bathroom, which is different from your en suite. Maybe you want two his-and-hers sinks to stop the battles over grooming space. Perhaps you want your bathroom to double as a storage area for towels and spare toiletries. No matter what you want the result to be, make sure you have a clear picture of it in your head, or even better, have a go at doing some basic drawings or designs. Mood boards are also a great way to channel you vision and work out what you like.

3. Acknowledge your Dream Bathroom:

Consider or visualise your dream bathroom and then work backwards from there to arrive at what is realistic and in line with your budget. Maybe you’d like to be able to relax in the tub with a TV at one end, or take a whirlpool bath. Perhaps you even want a quiet space to meditate, away from the bustle of everyday life. Don’t forget to do some online research to find ways you can make that happen.

4. Consider your Budget:

When you’ve decided what you want in your bathroom, you can start to work out your budget. If you need an indication of what bathroom renovations costs, use our free bathroom renovation calculator to get an idea. Stick to your initial goals, be sure to look for smart deals, and don’t get tempted by other products on the market. You would be wise to order the materials in advance, or have your renovation contractor do this for you.

5. Select the Right Bathroom Renovation Contractor:

Once you’ve got your ideas, find the right contractors who can make them happen for you. They’re the experts for a reason, and it’s a good idea to trust their advice. Consider a bathroom renovation package, instead of trying to do all the minor tasks yourself, so you can sit back and relax while you wait to enjoy the results.

6. Plan Ahead to Manage Complications:

Things might not be easy while your bathroom’s being renovated, particularly if you have kids. It’s likely to be messy, and you won’t be able to run your household as you usually would. If you have a second bathroom, or can sneak along to the gym for an occasional shower, great. If not, cut yourself some slack and don’t worry too much. Maintain open communications with your workers so you’ll know how long the commotion will last, and what plans you need to make, while you’re trying not to think about the dust that’s been created by your sink being ripped out.

7. Remember the Bigger Picture:

During the months of planning and hassle, remind yourself of the changes you first wanted to make and the luxurious touches you planned. Seeing your ideas become reality will be an immeasurably satisfying experience for you and hopefully a substantial increase in value for your house.
